The Dream World

She stared blankly at the snow that was playing it's fuzzy noise on the TV. For some reason that noise always calmed her down when she couldn't sleep. It was like a background noise that for some reason was able to sink her mind into a different world. It was like she was in a different world completely, when she heard the snow on the TV. After all, the dream world was a place not to different from the real world. Really, the only difference was that in the end the dream world was a place that could be controlled or not.

That's why tonight, she stared intently at the snow to see if anything would happen. To see if a hand would come out and take her into the dream world or if someone came to sweep her by her feet and just make her day complete by escorting her to a magical place that was part of her beautiful dream world.

No, none of that happened. She didn't expect it to happen, so slowly as her eyes became heavy listening to the snow for such a long time, she fell asleep in her bed...

The next moment, she was awake, but not really. She was in that dream world she'd loved her whole life.

"ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" she yelled looking at the place in discontent. "HONESTLY I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT JUST WAITING FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AND THE MOMENT I FALL ASLEEP I'M HERE!"

"Well, you can't just get into the dream world without falling asleep unless you can sleep with your eyes open, but that is quite a difficult skill to acquire," one of the sprites in my mind said as it flew around me.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," I said flicking it away to somewhere else far from here.

Of course, in the dream world it never mattered how she acted to whoever was there. She pushed them around and she told them to disappear or to shut up or to bleed to death and they would, because she cared for only one person and one person only, herself.

"Young maiden, will you help me?" a woman asked her.

"With what?" the girl asked wishing to be out because the dream world never truly interested her. It only interested her in the beginning, but it was all a child's fantasy in her eyes now.

"Well, you see I can't seem to pick any apples from the tree over there," the woman said.

The girl rolled her eyes and said, "Look, here are your apples!" The apples fell on the woman's head and she lay unconscious on the floor. "Too bad, she seemed really nice, too." The girl laughed as she continued to walk in the magical land that seemed to be in ruins after she arrived.

"You know, you should probably help us not hurt us," another sprite said buzzing around her face.

She squashed this one and wiped the blood on her skirt that she intended to suffocate one of the villagers with if she had nothing better to do.

"Miss, miss, my brother's been hurt can you help him?" a young girl, no older than four it seemed asked.

"Ah, he's been hurt and you want to help him?" the girl asked with the most sincere tone in her voice.

"Oh, yes please," she said begging on her knees.

The girl took out a magic wand and tapped it on the head of the girl and then the head of the boy. "He's all better, but now you have to pay the price."

"Brother, it hurts, my body hurts all over!!!" the child wailed wishing she had never approached the girl.

"HEY STOP IT!" another sprite said. The girl tried to knock this one away, but found it hard when she realized he was very quick and seemed to have fast reflexes.

"You're just a sprite, you can't do anything about it," the girl said. "This is my dream world, not yours!"

"It may be your dream world, but I can put you in shock and that will send you into a wave of compulsions on the outside. You won't be able to do anything about it and you'll never be able to return to the dream world. I beg of you please, don't hurt anyone else."

She rolled her eyes and ran away to a secluded area in the forest. It was quiet except for the sound of a crying baby. She looked at the baby and saw in his eyes innocence. She looked at this innocence and smiled maliciously at him. She saw that she could harm the baby in so many ways. She thought, "Why not?! It's my dream world, I would never do it in the real world, but here, everything's okay!"

As she was just about to hurt the child, someone came up and pushed her hard into a tree. "Girl, you have done too much harm to the dream world and the people inhabiting it. We warned you, didn't we? For disobeying our rules, you will be reprimanded with the most horrible punishment of all."

The girl could feel that she could no longer think, she could no longer control the dream world. The power to control her dreams was out of her hands now. She saw everyone she had hurt in the dream world come and submerge her into a darkness. Into a darkness she could never come out of. That was the lesson she learned that day. A lesson she learned a little too late.
