Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is a 1953 comedy musical (with some romance as well) based on the 1949 musical of the same name, which was based on the 1925 novel by Anita Loos. There is also a 1928 silent film adaptation of the novel as well (hopefully I can watch that one, too).

Basically, the movie is about Lorelei Lee, the dumb blonde looking for someone rich, and Dorothy Shaw, the witty brunette looking for love. The two are showgirls and when Gus Edmund, Lorelei's fiance, sends them out on a cruise to France, the story begins from there.

Ok, so that was not a very good description, but it truly is the basic plot, I would not like to ruin the rest for you. I say watch it, because once they get on the cruise it gets really exciting from there. I was only watching it for Marilyn Monroe, but it turned out to be a really funny and entertaining movie.

Cast:
Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee (Gosh, she plays the dumb blonde role very well.)
Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw (She's a really good actress, too. XD She was very funny.)
Charles Courbon as Sir Francis "Piggy" Beekman (He gave me the creeps)
Elliot Reed as Ernie Malone (Loved him, then hated him, and then loved him again)
Tommy Noonan as Gus Edmund (He was so adorable in a nerdy, shy way)
George Winslow as Henry Spofford III (he's such a minimal character, but I wanted to add him in here, because he is the cutest part of the movie and his scenes are very funny)

Alright, done with the cast. This movie is really about best friends and how opposites attract and that's what I really liked about it. Costumes were great I mean Marilyn looked 10/10 in all of them.

Acting was spot on, music was great, and plot and execution of plot were great.

There's also a tiny scene spoken in French, but you'll understand what's being said in context to what's going on in the film.

I'm giving this movie 10/10. It's not even because I'm biased towards Marilyn Monroe, because I saw a movie with her before this one and it was so bad I couldn't believe it =/ 

So yes, this movie is excellent and I recommend you watch it.

Amélie

What A Nice Film...

I watched it last week, but had no time at all to make a post about it. I have just finished listening to the soundtrack and will comment about that as well in this post.

Brief Synopsis:

This movie really cannot be described. It is really just the story of a girl going on adventures, mostly to help out others, but what I got from the movie was that it is nice to enjoy the simple things in life. There are many underlying themes in here, too as well. Like, not to give up on hope and to go for it even when you're afraid. Stuff like that. It is two hours long, but worth it. The experience of the movie was so great that I did not feel like I was watching a movie, but experiencing the journey with her.

In France, where it was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (I will be watching Delicatessen by him soon, so watch out for that post), it is called The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain. 

I'm only going to talk about the actress and her performance. Audrey Tatou, very beautiful woman, was really able to capture the role of Amelie, because what I got from the role of Amelie was a strange, socially inept girl. She was able to capture that perfectly and still make it seem believable. Some people can capture their roles perfectly, but you can tell they're acting, with her role you could not. That's how great of an actress she is.

It won best film at the European Film Awards. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, but did not win any.

Soundtrack:

The soundtrack was composed by Yann Tiersen. I listened to it, including the bonus French tracks and it does fit with the movie. It is very calming actually and if you listen very closely, it's a bit carefree and whimsical at least in my opinion it was. I really do think it fits Amelie, the character, very well. I could imagine her listening to the soundtrack and thinking it was great music. I did not listen to it in succession, but even so I thought it was a great soundtrack. (I do not believe this video has the extra songs from the French soundtrack, but if not you can always check the song listings here.)

The wikipedia page also says something about a musical adaptation being done. Maybe in the near future I may have the pleasure of watching it and giving it a review.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Movie)

I just watched this movie today (2.13.15)...

My mom had recently read the book about two or three months ago and she borrowed the movie from the library when she saw it was in their catalogue. We came upon this book when we went to BookOff (great place to find interesting books!~) and when we're there I usually have nothing to do (I don't like to read manga there or else I'll get really enraptured in the story)so I tell my mom that I should read the first chapter of every book and tell her if it's worth it or not to get it. I read the book and said, "Hey, this seems really cool." I don't remember much of what I read though, but I really did enjoy it from what I read.

Well, she said the book was good, but that surprisingly the MOVIE was better.

It was a great movie, who knew a concept like this could be turned into something so riveting.

Basic Synopsis: 

A girl joins a dancing marathon competition, her partner is kicked out for being sick (so as to not give the illness to the other contestants). The director of the competition says the girl can get another partner if she can find one and right out there in the crowd he finds a random guy just standing around not trying out for the competition. He agrees since he has nothing better to do and from there the story begins.

Jane Fonda is in this movie, she's amazing!!! I loved her character (Gloria) so much!!!

Jane Fonda as Gloria Beatty (her smart-alack ways were funny. Great acting as well. My favorite character.)

Michael Sarrazin as Robert Syverton (best line in the movie "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?")

Susannah York as Alice LeBlanc (She was very pretty, too. I was indifferent to her character, she neither amazed me nor aggravated me. My little cousin who happened to pass by at the beginning of the movie stopped and said "Whoa, who is that?" I found that so adorable)

Gig Young as Rocky (Ugh, I hated this guy so much he was such a sleeze!!!)

Red Buttons as Harry Kline (Old guy acting like he was 31. I loved his character!!!)

Bonnie Bedelia as Ruby (I was half-annoyed by her, but also half-sorry for her character.)

Bruce Dern as James (Indifferent to his character. I mean really he wasn't that big of a character in the movie. I just identified him as the Ruby's husband.)

Allyn Ann McLerie as Shirley (Another character I was indifferent to.)

The rest of the sort of main characters are on wikipedia I just have nothing to say about them so it's kind of pointless for me to post anymore. They were minor characters anyway. I will post the link to the wikipedia page below at the end of the post.

It was released December 10, 1969. The movie is set in the '30s though as my mom said. It lasts 2 hours and is based on the book of the same name by Horace McCoy.

Heart String Marionette

Today I Saw A Great Animated Film...

I promise not to spoil the film, so my explanations may not be all that great.

I only wanted to see Heart String Marionette, because I knew Jimmy Urine voiced a character in the movie called "The Body". I didn't think I'd actually love it, but I did. I loved everything about the movie.

Heart String Marionette is a captivating film and a must see for all independent film lovers. From what I read on the website, it took them four years to make because of a tight budget, but hey it worked out! It's a really great movie! :)

It's hard to say what the true meaning of the film is, but here's what I can say I think the underlying messages put out in the story are: child abuse, society, and religion.

• Child abuse, because it is really what the main character was going through. 
• Society, because everyone in the film wears a mask and I think that may be like how everyone in society wears a mask to hide their true selves. They use that mask to be in good eyes of whoever is above them.
• Religion, because there are a lot of crosses in this movie and there's a whole scene about a fanatic Christian town.

Another great factor about the film is the music. The music really captures the mood of the film at all moments. There's a song for every scene and it captures the feeling of each scene very well.

The movie was created by M Dot Strange and Endika. Endika does all the music with his band apparently.

Here are the characters that I thought were essential to the film. There are a lot of minor characters that really shape the film, too.

(I'm not putting pictures since I couldn't find pictures of ever single person in the film:)

• Samhaine Tsuke voiced by JP Anderson: He was the main character who deals with a lot of problems.  The voice scared me at first when I was watching the movie, but I got used to it. His character is a samurai
• Siouxsie Silen voiced by Asil Aceves: I loved her voice and I think she captured the character pretty well and her lines were really cool. "That is very not nice!" Her voice reminded me of Hilary Haag as Merry Nightmare in the anime Dream Eater Merry or even Brittney Karbowski in a way. She was my favorite character. Her character is a stripper.
• Tatsuya voiced by M Dot Strange: He was a funny character. He lightened up the mood a bit, but never really barged into the story that much. He's a samurai who fell in love with Siouxsie... or her boobs? xD
• Lord Wor voiced by Richard Grove: Apparently Samhaine's father? I'm still very unsure as to who is who in this movie, but the website cleared it up for me a bit.

The story is set in Japan also if that helps a little, but more about that is explained on the website. If you notice on http://heartstringmarionette.com/story/ it talks about how there is no story to this film, but that there is a purpose to it.

I'm not going to post the movie up here, but I think if we're rating this by how a movie theater would rate it, it would be rated R. So watch it on your own time like me, if you are a kid/tween/teen. I don't know?!

First Day Of October

The Things I'm Thinking Of Is...

1. Halloween! 
2. Scary Movies!

1. For Halloween I am dressing up as Harley Quinn. She's beautiful and crazy! I'm so obsessed with her! Can't wait to see how amazing I'll look. Of course, my school calls Halloween a distraction so that's a no go for me, but I'm still going to wear it after school. Everyone shall see that I am a Harley Quinn-ater!

2. Always, always, always, looking forward to scary movies. I'm going to watch every movie I can, but not at night. SUCKS RIGHT BUT I GET IT IN MY MIND THAT IT'S WATCHING ME OR SOMETHING!

3. So I already said about what I'd be for Halloween, but the fact that it's a day to be someone other than yourself is great. I wish I knew how to sew, because Halloween would be everyday for me.

4. And last but not least, the candy!!!!!! I'm talking fun size, king size, (if you go to a rich neighborhood)normal size! I don't care. It all tastes great to me! Like I said in one of my other posts (I think) I'm a big chocoholic.

SO 30 days to go until Halloween. Don't be the person who goes the day of to buy their costume at Party City or that random Cosplay shop all the way in some city you've never been to.
